Using telematics to optimize the costs of corporate vehicle fleets

Growth opportunity for telematics in corporate vehicle fleets

The market research study "CVO Corporate Fleet Barometer 2017" demonstrates that telematics has found its way into corporate vehicle fleets. With a penetration rate of just 20% in the EU, however, there is still a large growth opportunity in this market segment.

Telematics brings forth some very clear benefits for fleet managers, as it helps answer questions such as the following:

  • How are the vehicles being used, and can a more optimized utilization planning eventually help reduce the size of the fleet?
  • Which trips were for private and business purposes?
  • What is the current mileage for leased vehicles with a kilometre contract?

The same market analysis shows that vehicles are being replaced in medium to large fleets on average every 3.6 to 5.5 years. The installation of telematics hardware can become a significant cost factor in fleets where vehicles are frequently replaced. Therefore, a key issue is which telematics solutions minimize the impact on installation costs and at the same time do not require any modifications to the vehicles as a result of such installations.

Picotrack SafeDrive: Cost-optimizing solution for corporate vehicle fleets

The Picotrack SafeDrive device is perfectly suited for a deployment in corporate vehicle fleets. With its Cigarette Lighter Adapter (CLA) design, it can be installed inside cars with the least possible effort. There is no need for a complex installation of antennas (as this is frequently necessary with standard blackbox devices), since all necessary components including the antennas are integrating within the device. Connecting the device to the vehicle's power source is also extremely easy, since it just needs to be plugged into the vehicle's 12V cigarette lighter socket.

This design ist also interesting for leased cars, since the installation does not require any modifications to the vehicle whatsoever. Whenever a leasing contract has expired, the device just needs to be plugged out of the car and inserted into the next one. Thus, there are no installation costs involved whatsoever. With this approach, the device can also easily be shared between multiple vehicles, thus reducing the average cost of the device per vehicle.
